The Museum is installed in the former stock exchange buildings. It is a building in the shape of Greek temple, inspired from Paestum, near Napoli. It was built in 1810 by Thomas of Thomson. Over the colonnades, the allegory of Neptune recalls the importance of maritime trade for St Petersburg. The museum traces the history of the Russian and Soviet Navy. There are many (1700) models of ships, submarines and even heavy cannon mounted on rails. Many schemes explaining battles and campaigns. Unfortunately, everything is in Russian, Cyrillic: no subtitles in English. To compensate, many paintings representing ships and sea battles. The pride of the museum has to be the boat of Peter the Great, known as the «Grandfather of the Russian Navy». It was on this very boat that Peter learned to sail as a teenager and acquired his fascination for the sea, sea faring and shipbuilding. This fascination later prompted Peter the Great to found the Russian navy.If you are interested in military and naval memorabilia, then welcome to the travel agency of St Petersburg «GrandPeterburg» — we organize tours for private tourists and groups of cruise passengers.
